Whether you are moving because you want to, or because you have to, doing your research is key to your future success. The best place to start is to figure out the Who, What, Where and When - you already know the Why.
A timeline of when you need to move will help you plan what you need to do to get to your goal on time. For example, adults that have season jobs need to plan accordingly around the season and the characteristics of that time of year. If it's summer, you should have smooth sailing, but if you are moving to Colorado in winter, you may have some travel issues and you should plan your packing to have shovels, winter clothes, etc. ready first. When children are in the picture, school schedules can be a part of the planning. Most buyers with children choose to buy houses in the Spring. By the time they close on the house and are able to move, it will most likely be mid-summer by the time they are settled in and ready to get the kids into their new school(s). That kind of covers the Who for the most part as well. Everyone moving has to be considered to have a solid plan when selling your current property, even your pets.
What you are moving needs logistics too. Your personal belongings like clothes, tools, household goods, furniture, cars, sports equipment all need to be considered when coordinating with a moving company or evening doing it yourself and choosing the right moving equipment, personnel and the vehicles needed to get the job done.
Where you move to seems like a no brainer, but sometimes that isn't as easy as it seems. Having a family member, friends or other "boots on the ground" where you plan to move to is a huge help when coordinating your move. If neither of those exist, you can always depend on a solid real estate professional in the area. They will know all of the ins and outs of the area aside from just finding a house. They can help with virtual showings and connect you with local contractors, professionals - even the best pizza shop in town!
